(Photo: Andina archive) The Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains will be undergoing maintenance works, therefore suspending visitors from the areas, in the month of April 2016, according to Andina news agency. The head of the National Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu, Fernando Astete, told Andina that the maintenance works are running efficiently, however, the large amount of daily visitors does take a toll on the maintenance they are able to execute. “In April 2016 we will do comprehensive maintenance, for that we have ordered the suspension of visitors to the mountain Huayna Picchu from April 1-15, and the mountain of Machu Picchu from April 16-30 of the same year,” Astete told Andina news agency. The Ministry of Culture has approved the suspension of visitors and Astete has called on agencies to make the proper adjustments to ensure the satisfaction of customers. “There has been a thorough technical assessment of the condition of the stairs, walls, enclosures and platforms, reaching the conclusion that a comprehensive maintenance is needed,” said the director of the Department of Culture of Cusco, Ricardo Ruiz Caro. Since National Geographic named Machu Picchu the of the year this year, it is evident that the Incan fortress is attracting ever more tourists.
